In restless dreams I walked a- C# (V) lone

Narrow streets of cobble- d# (vi) stone 

'Neath the halo of a B (IV) street lamp F# (I) 

F# (I) I turned my collar to the B (IV) cold and damp F# (I)  

When my B (IV) eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon F# (I) light 

That split the d# (vi) night And touched the C# (V) sound of d# (vi) silence 

And in the naked light I C# (V) saw Ten thousand people, maybe d# (vi) more

People talking without B (IV) speaking F# (I)  

F# (I) People hearing without B (IV) listening F# (I) 

F# (I) People writing B (IV) songs that voices never F# (I) share 

And no one d# (vi) dare Disturb the C# (V) sound of d# (vi) silence

Hear my words that I might B (IV) teach you F# (I) 

F# (I) Take my arms that I might B (IV) reach you" F# (I)  

But my B (IV) words like silent raindrops F# (I) fell d# (vi) 

And F# (I) echoed In the C# (V) wells of F# (I) silence 

And the people bowed and C# (V) prayed To the neon god they d# (vi) made 

And the sign flashed out its B (IV) warning F# (I) 

F# (I) In the words that it was B (IV) forming F# (I) 

F# (I) And the sign said, "The B (IV) words of the prophets 

Are written on the subway F# (I) walls And tenement d# (vi) halls" 

And F# (I) whisper'd in the C# (V) sounds of d# (vi) silence
